When to Schedule an Oral Cancer Screening

The first line of defense against oral cancer is yourself. We recommend that you perform routine self-examinations and look for warning signs. These include abnormal sores, lumps, or growths. Additionally, you should note any unexpected pain, swelling, or difficulties while swallowing or moving your tongue or jaw. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, you should contact a medical professional for a cancer screening if any of these persist for two weeks or more

What to Expect During Your Screening

During your screening, our doctors will:

  1. Perform a visual examination. They will inspect the lips, gums, cheeks, tongue, and roof/floor of your mouth.
  2. Possibly also perform a physical examination. It is necessary at times for our doctors to use gloved hands to feel for lumps or changes in the texture of your mouth’s tissues.
  3. Utilize various tools during the visual and/or physical examination. These include tongue depressors and light sources.
  4. Ask about your medical history. Their questions could concern your symptoms, habits like tobacco or alcohol use, and whether your family members have had oral cancer.
  5. Potentially recommend further testing. Should our doctors identify suspicious areas, they may recommend an oral biopsy, x-ray, or CT scan.

At Valencia Periodontics, we understand an oral cancer screening is a stressful experience for many. This is why we take great care to make patients feel comfortable and equip them with clear and accurate information about their health.

Who Is Most at Risk for Oral Cancer?

As we noted, oral cancer is most prominent in men and adults over 40. Additionally, The Mayo Clinic suggests several habits and conditions increase the likelihood of developing oral cancer. If you use tobacco, drink heavily, or spend a lot of time out in the sun without sunscreen protection, you could be at a greater risk. Should you have human papillomavirus (HPV) or a compromised immune system, you may also be at an increased risk.
