Oral Biopsy

Valencia Oral Biopsy Procedure

What Is an Oral Biopsy?

During an oral biopsy, a surgeon will remove a small piece of tissue from the mouth for further examination. A biopsy is useful for diagnosing or ruling out medical conditions, including cancer, infections, and autoimmune diseases.

If a doctor or dentist has recommended that you have an oral biopsy, contact Valencia Periodontics. Our highly experienced doctors can perform this procedure and provide the information you need to protect and better your health.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (661) 449-2371 or contact us. We proudly serve Valencia, Canyon Country, and other areas in the Santa Clarita Valley.

When Do You Need an Oral Biopsy?

A doctor or dentist might recommend an oral biopsy for various reasons, including:

  • Suspicion of oral cancer: The presence of lesions, ulcers, and other growths in the mouth can necessitate a biopsy.
  • Unclear diagnosis: If an initial oral cancer screening provides an unclear diagnosis, an oral biopsy can help.
  • Monitoring: Even if a lesion is benign, doctors or dentists might recommend an oral biopsy to ensure this does not change.
  • Infections and inflammation: Oral biopsies make it possible to diagnose various infections accurately.
  • Pre-treatment evaluation: If you are preparing for radiation therapy or chemotherapy, an oral biopsy may be necessary to establish a baseline to compare your progress against after treatment.

Are Oral Biopsies Painful?

In general, our doctors use local anesthesia to numb the biopsy area, making the procedure relatively painless. In certain cases, other sedation methods could ease your anxiety about a biopsy.

After the procedure, you may experience soreness in the biopsy area. However, you can expect this soreness to subside in a few days.

If you are concerned about your pain tolerance and how it may impact a biopsy, consult one of our caring team members. We would gladly address concerns and answer questions so we can deliver personalized care.
