The first step in treating your gum disease will always be as non-invasive as possible. This usually involves a non-surgical initial phase of therapy usually including scaling and root planing. Scaling and Root Planing is also known as a “Deep cleaning” and carefully removes plaque and calculus (aka tartar) deposits that have settled onto the root surfaces underneath the gums in deeper periodontal pockets. The goal is to smoothen the root surfaces and to remove bacteria and toxins from the roots and tissues to enhance healing. Some patients do not require further treatment after scaling and root planing other than a more frequent maintenance schedule for cleanings to be done every 3-4 months. However, when non-surgical treatment alone does not achieve periodontal health, surgical treatment may be needed to restore your gums to a healthy state.

Patients may also benefit from at-home use of the Perio Sciences line of products including a mouth rinse and dental gel. These are antioxidant- based dental products that use a combination of antioxidants and essential oils to help target resistant periodontal pockets and bacteria, reduce inflammation, and enhance the appearance of the gum tissue.
We often recommend use of the antioxidant gel in the days following soft tissue grafting and some other periodontal procedures to enhance healing. Order Here
