Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue shrinks away from the teeth and the roots of the teeth become exposed. Exposed roots make the teeth appear longer which can cause you to look older than you are. Recession may also lead to increased sensitivity to cold and hot. Another significant concern with a tooth with recession is progression of the recession – when the gums become inflamed and continue to shrink you are losing more gum tissue and bone which can ultimately lead to tooth loss.
Recession is caused by a variety of factors including gum disease, aggressive toothbrushing, smoking, orthodontics, tooth misalignment, genetics and grinding. Tongue piercing and some lip piercings rub and irritate the gums and over time wear away at the gum tissue and lead to severe bone loss and recession that leads to loss of a lower front tooth.
